What is seid?

Seid is a form of ancient Norse magic and shamanism practiced by the Vikings and other Germanic tribes. It was primarily a form of prophesying and divination, as well as healing and shape-shifting. Seid practitioners were usually women known as "volvas" who had a strong connection to the spiritual realm and were able to communicate with spirits and gods.

Seid involved various rituals including chanting, drumming, and entering a trance-like state to connect with the spirit world. It was a powerful and respected form of magic, but also considered taboo and associated with witchcraft by Christian authorities.

The practice of seid declined with the spread of Christianity and the persecution of pagan beliefs in Scandinavia. However, interest in Norse mythology and magic has seen a resurgence in modern times, with some people seeking to revive the practice of seid and incorporate it into contemporary pagan rituals.
