What is seperation?

Separation is a legal process that allows spouses or domestic partners to end their legal relationship and live separately. It involves filing a petition with the court to declare a legal separation, which can address issues such as child custody, child support, spousal support, and property division. Unlike divorce, separation does not end the marriage or domestic partnership, but allows the couple to live apart and make decisions about their lives without being legally tied to each other. Separation can be temporary or permanent, and can sometimes lead to reconciliation or eventually divorce. It is often used as a step towards divorce if couples are not sure if they want to end their marriage.
