What is shaakuntalam?

Shaakuntalam is a celebrated Indian play written by the renowned poet and playwright, Kalidasa. It is based on the story of Shakuntala, found in the Mahabharata.

The play narrates the love story of Shakuntala, the adopted daughter of Sage Kanva, and King Dushyanta. They meet in the forest, fall in love, and marry in a Gandharva marriage. Dushyanta must return to his kingdom but promises to send for Shakuntala.

Due to a curse by Sage Durvasa, Dushyanta forgets Shakuntala. When Shakuntala travels to his court to claim her rightful place as queen, he fails to recognize her.

Later, a ring that Dushyanta had given Shakuntala is recovered, breaking the curse. Dushyanta remembers Shakuntala, and after a period of separation and repentance, they are reunited and eventually live happily ever after with their son, Bharata.

Shaakuntalam is renowned for its beautiful poetry, evocative descriptions of nature, and exploration of themes like love, duty, loss, and redemption.
