What is soga?

Soga (or Soga language) is a Bantu language spoken in Tanzania, mainly in the coastal region, by the Soga people. It is also spoken in regions of Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda. Soga is a tonal language with eight noun classes that indicate gender and number. Verbs in Soga can be divided into two main classes, those that take a subject prefix and those that take an object prefix.

The Soga people are known for their agricultural practices, with banana cultivation being a major crop. They also engage in fishing, pottery, and music. The Soga kingdom was one of the earliest centralized states in what is now Tanzania, and they played a significant role in the establishment of the first German colonial administration in East Africa. Today, many Soga people are bilingual in Swahili or English and are involved in various professions including business, education, and politics.
