A soucouyant is a creature from Caribbean folklore, particularly in the countries of Trinidad and Tobago and Dominica. It is said to be a shape-shifting female vampire or witch who peels off her skin at night to transform into a ball of fire and fly through the air in search of victims.
The soucouyant is believed to suck the blood of sleeping people, usually leaving a mark on their skin. In some versions of the legend, she may also steal their life force or even possess them. To protect themselves from a soucouyant, people may place a heap of rice or salt outside their door, as the creature is said to have to count each grain before she can enter.
The story of the soucouyant has been passed down through generations in Caribbean culture, and it continues to be a popular figure in folklore and superstition in the region.
