Sukhoi Su-34 "Fullback"
The Sukhoi Su-34 (NATO reporting name: Fullback) is a Russian twin-engine, twin-seat, strike fighter/fighter-bomber. It's designed to primarily engage ground and naval targets with a wide range of guided and unguided weapons, operating day and night, and in all weather conditions. It is intended to replace the Sukhoi Su-24 tactical bomber.
Key Features and Design Aspects:
- Role: Primarily a Strike Fighter/Fighter-Bomber. It also possesses air-to-air combat capabilities.
- Design: The Su-34 features a distinctive "platypus" nose, which houses a sophisticated radar system. The side-by-side seating arrangement for the pilot and weapon systems officer (WSO) is another distinguishing characteristic, providing enhanced crew communication and cooperation on long-range missions.
- Cockpit: The armored cockpit provides crew protection. The pressurized cockpit allows operation at high altitudes without the need for oxygen masks, increasing crew comfort and effectiveness on long flights. Access to the cockpit is via a ladder integrated into the nose landing gear.
- Avionics and Sensors: The aircraft is equipped with advanced Avionics, including a multi-mode phased array radar for air-to-air and air-to-surface detection and targeting, an electronic warfare (EW) suite, and navigation systems.
- Armament: The Su-34 can carry a substantial payload of air-to-air missiles, air-to-surface missiles, guided bombs, and unguided rockets. It also has an internal 30mm cannon.
- Performance: Known for its long range and endurance, the Su-34 is capable of carrying out extended missions without refueling. It also possesses good maneuverability for a strike fighter.
- Operational History: The Su-34 has seen combat in conflicts, including the Syrian Civil War and the Russo-Ukrainian War.
