What is su57?

The Sukhoi Su-57 (Russian: Сухой Су-57; NATO reporting name: Felon) is a Russian stealth, multirole fighter aircraft designed for air superiority and attack roles. It's developed under the PAK FA (Russian: ПАК ФА, short for: Перспективный авиационный комплекс фронтовой авиации, lit. 'Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation') programme.

Key features and aspects of the Su-57 include:

  • Stealth Technology: Incorporates features designed to reduce radar cross-section, including internal weapons bays and shaping. This is a crucial aspect of stealth.
  • Supercruise: Capability to sustain supersonic speeds without the use of afterburners, offering increased efficiency and range. Supercruise is an important advantage.
  • Advanced Avionics: Equipped with advanced radar systems, including AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar, and electronic warfare capabilities.
  • Maneuverability: Designed for high agility and maneuverability, enabling it to perform complex aerial maneuvers. This makes Maneuverability a key factor.
  • Armament: Can carry a variety of air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, as well as bombs.
  • Engine: The current Su-57s utilize AL-41F1 engines, while a more advanced engine, the Izdeliye 30, is under development and intended for future production models. Engine development is ongoing.

The Su-57 aims to be a highly capable fighter jet, but its development has faced delays and challenges. Its operational status and production numbers are limited compared to other 5th generation fighters.
