What is sublessee?

A sublessee is a person who rents a property from a primary tenant, who already holds a lease agreement with the landlord/property owner. Subleasing is the process of renting out a property to a sublessee, either for a short-term or long-term period. The sublessee is bound by the terms and conditions of the primary lease agreement and usually pays rent to the primary tenant, who then pays the landlord. The sublessee may enjoy similar benefits and rights as the primary tenant, but the primary tenant ultimately has responsibility for ensuring that rent is paid and that the property remains in good order. Subleasing is not allowed in all lease agreements, so it's important to verify with the landlord or legal counsel.
