What is sublimate?

Sublimation is a process in which a solid substance transforms directly into a gas without going through the liquid state. This process is driven by a shift in temperature and pressure. If the temperature and pressure of a solid substance are increased to its triple point, it can sublimate, which means it can convert directly from solid to gas, leaving no liquid behind.

The word "sublimate" can also be used as a verb, meaning to transform or to refine something into something better or more elevated. In psychology, "sublimation" refers to the process of redirecting one's impulses or desires into productive or socially acceptable behavior.

Examples of substances that can undergo sublimation include dry ice (solid carbon dioxide), mothballs (naphthalene), and some types of incense. Sublimation is commonly used in scientific fields, like chemistry and physics, as well as in industries such as food processing and pharmaceuticals.
