Surtr (Old Norse: Surtur, meaning "black" or "swarthy") is a prominent figure in Norse mythology. He is a fire giant (a jötunn) from Muspelheim, the realm of fire.
Role in Ragnarök: Surtr's most significant role is during Ragnarök, the prophesied end of the world. He is destined to lead the fire giants in an assault against the gods. He will wield a flaming sword, often referred to as his "burning sword".
Destruction: During Ragnarök, Surtr will clash with the god Freyr, ultimately killing him. After the battle, Surtr will unleash his fiery power upon the world, engulfing it in flames, destroying both gods and men, and cleansing the old world for a new beginning. Some accounts describe him igniting the world with his sword.
Appearance: Surtr is typically depicted as a colossal giant with skin as black as coal and wielding a blazing sword. His presence is meant to inspire fear and awe.
Location: He is stationed at the border of Muspelheim, guarding it with his fiery weapon.
