What is swartzia?

Swartzia is a genus of flowering plants in the bean family, Fabaceae. The genus comprises around 200 species of trees and shrubs and is predominantly found in tropical regions of the Americas.

Many species of Swartzia have been traditionally used for medicinal purposes by Indigenous peoples in South America. Some species are also commercially important for their timber, which is highly prized for its durability and suitability for use in construction and furniture making.

Swartzia species generally have pinnate leaves and flowers that are grouped in clusters or racemes. The fruit of Swartzia species is typically a legume or pod, which contains seeds that are sometimes used as a food source by wildlife and humans.

Threats to Swartzia species include habitat destruction and overharvesting for timber. Some species are also at risk due to climate change. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and preserve the diversity of Swartzia species.
