The Tarquins were a family of wealthy Etruscan nobles who ruled over Rome as kings in the 6th and 5th centuries BC. There were three kings named Tarquin: Tarquin the Elder, Tarquin the Proud, and Tarquinia. Tarquin the Elder was credited with founding the Roman Games, while Tarquin the Proud was the last king of Rome before the city became a republic in 509 BC. The Tarquins were known for their lavish displays of wealth and power, which eventually led to their downfall as the Roman people grew tired of their tyrannical rule. The Tarquins were eventually exiled from Rome and their family was banned from ever holding public office again, ending their reign as kings over Rome.
