What is tarsometatarsal?

The tarsometatarsal joint, also known as the Lisfranc joint, is located in the midfoot and connects the tarsal bones (which form the ankle) to the metatarsal bones (which form the toes). This joint is responsible for maintaining the arch of the foot and transferring weight and force from the heel to the toes during normal gait. Injuries to the tarsometatarsal joint are uncommon but can occur from direct trauma or twisting of the foot. These injuries can result in pain, swelling, and instability of the foot. Treatment may involve immobilization, physical therapy, or surgery in severe cases.
