What is thurible?

A thurible, also known as an incense burner, is a metal censer used in religious ceremonies to disperse incense during worship. It typically consists of a container, often made of brass or other metals, suspended by chains, which holds burning coals or charcoal on which incense is placed. The thurible is swung or used to cense people or objects by a religious officiant, spreading the fragrant smoke throughout the space.

Thuribles are commonly used in Christian, Islamic, and other religious traditions as part of formal rituals and ceremonies. In Christian liturgical traditions, thuribles are often used during Mass, processions, and other sacred rites to symbolize the prayers of the faithful rising up to heaven. The incense is believed to represent the prayers and praises of the worshippers as they ascend to God.

Thuribles come in various designs, sizes, and styles, ranging from simple to elaborate, and are often adorned with decorative detailing and symbolism. They are an important part of the sensory experience of worship, enhancing the atmosphere and sacredness of religious rituals.
