What is trolamine?

Trolamine, also known as triethanolamine (TEA), is a colorless to slightly yellowish viscous liquid with an ammonia-like odor. It is a triol (a molecule with three hydroxyl groups) and has the chemical formula HOCH2CH2N(CH2CH2OH)2. Trolamine is commonly used as an emulsifier, surfactant, pH adjuster, and buffering agent in various cosmetic and personal care products, such as moisturizers, sunscreen lotions, shaving creams, and hair conditioners. It is also used in pharmaceutical formulations, such as topical analgesics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and ophthalmic solutions, due to its ability to increase drug solubility and enhance skin penetration. Trolamine has low toxicity and is considered safe for use in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products when used in accordance with established guidelines.
