U-2540 was a German Type XXI U-boat from World War II that was commissioned in 1945. It was one of the few Type XXI U-boats that survived the war and was captured by the British Royal Navy. In 1946, it was transferred to the United States Navy and used for testing and evaluation purposes.
In 1950, U-2540 was sunk during a torpedo firing exercise off the coast of Key West, Florida. It was later salvaged, restored, and put on display as a museum ship in Bremerhaven, Germany.
U-2540 was an advanced submarine for its time, with a streamlined hull design, high underwater speed, and improved battery capacity. It was intended to be a revolutionary submarine that could outmaneuver and outperform Allied vessels, but it was not put into service in time to have a significant impact on the outcome of the war.
