U-29 was a German Type VIIA submarine that served in the Kriegsmarine during World War II. It was commissioned on August 14, 1936, and was commanded by Kapitänleutnant Otto Schuhart. The submarine had a displacement of 626 tonnes when surfaced and 745 tonnes when submerged. It had a length of 64.5 meters, a beam of 5.85 meters, and a draft of 4.37 meters. U-29 was equipped with four torpedo tubes, one 8.8 cm deck gun, and one 2 cm anti-aircraft gun.
During its service, U-29 carried out six patrols in the Atlantic Ocean, North Sea, and Mediterranean Sea. The submarine was credited with sinking 35 ships, including the British liner SS Athenia, which was the first ship sunk during the war and resulted in 112 civilian deaths. U-29 was eventually sunk on June 22, 1941, in the North Atlantic by depth charges from the British destroyer HMS Viscount and the corvette HMS Arbutus. Only nine of its crew members out of a total of 44 survived.
