What is uerdingen?

Uerdingen is a district of the German city of Krefeld, located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The official name of the district is Krefeld-Uerdingen since 1929. Uerdingen has a population of around 21,000 people.

Historically, Uerdingen was an independent town until it was incorporated into Krefeld in 1929. The town played an important role in the development of the German chemical industry, starting with the production of aniline dyes in the mid-19th century. The major chemical companies, such as Bayer and BASF, were founded in Uerdingen and nearby Leverkusen.

Today, Uerdingen is known for its picturesque historic center with many half-timbered houses, the river Rhine promenade, and its beautiful parks. The district also has a strong industrial and scientific focus, with Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research, Airbus helicopter production facilities, and several other manufacturing companies.
