What is wains?

Wains is an archaic word that has fallen out of modern usage. The word "wains" specifically refers to large, open farm wagons with low sides that are used to carry goods or crops. Wains were typically drawn by draft animals such as horses, oxen, or mules and were often used in rural societies for transportation, hauling crops, and plowing fields. These kinds of carts were usually made of wood and had four sturdy wheels. Over time, wains have evolved into more modern forms of transportation, such as trucks and trailers. The term "wainscoting" is derived from wains, referring to the timber paneling or panelling found in the lower part of the walls of a room, its purpose being to provide insulation and protection from damp.
