What is yobe?

Yobe is a state in northeastern Nigeria, with Damaturu as its capital city. It was created on August 27, 1991, when Nigeria had 30 states. Yobe State is bordered to the north by the Republic of Niger, to the east by Borno State, to the west by Jigawa State, and to the south by Bauchi and Gombe States.

Yobe State has a landmass of 45,502 square kilometers and an estimated population of 3.6 million people based on projections from the National Population Commission. Its predominant ethnic group is the Kanuri, who are predominantly Muslims. Generally speaking, the people of Yobe State are agrarian and rely mainly on farming and livestock rearing for their livelihoods.

Yobe State is known for its many landmarks, national parks, cultural festivals, and historic sites. These include the West African white pelican sanctuary, the Bade pottery center of Bara Goma, the Dagona waterfowl sanctuary, and the Nguru lake wildlife park. The state is also rich in mineral resources such as gypsum, mica, and kaolin.
