What is asperation?

Aspiration occurs when a foreign substance, such as food or water, enters the airway and lungs instead of the stomach. This can happen during eating, drinking, or swallowing, and individuals with certain medical conditions, such as dysphagia or neurological disorders, may be at an increased risk for aspiration. Aspiration can cause a range of symptoms, including coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, and chest pain. Severe cases can lead to pneumonia or other lung infections. Treatment for aspiration may include antibiotics, respiratory support, or surgical intervention in some cases. Prevention measures may include modifications to diet or positioning during eating and swallowing.
