What is av01?

AV1 is a new open source video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), which is a group of major tech companies including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Netflix. AV1 has been designed to provide high-quality video compression while using less data, making it ideal for streaming video over the internet. AV1 supports resolutions up to 8K and supports HDR and wide color gamut. It also offers better compression compared to older video codecs like VP9 and H.265/HEVC. AV1 is still relatively new and not widely supported by all devices and platforms, but its usage is expected to increase in the coming years.
