What is buduburam?

Buduburam is a refugee camp located in Ghana, near the town of Gomoa Buduburam. The camp was originally established in the early 1990s to accommodate Liberian refugees fleeing the civil war in their country.

At its peak, Buduburam housed over 40,000 refugees from Liberia and other conflict-affected countries in West Africa. However, in recent years, the population of the camp has declined significantly as many refugees have voluntarily repatriated to Liberia or resettled in other countries.

Buduburam has faced numerous challenges, including overcrowding, lack of basic services such as clean water and sanitation, and limited access to education and health care. The camp has also been plagued by issues such as crime and exploitation.

Efforts have been made to improve conditions in Buduburam, including the construction of new housing units, schools, and health facilities. However, the future of the camp remains uncertain as the Ghanaian government has expressed its desire to close it down and integrate remaining refugees into local communities.
