What is gamtoos?

Gamtoos is a river in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. It originates in the Kouga Mountains and flows approximately 645 kilometers into the Indian Ocean near Jeffreys Bay. The valley through which the Gamtoos River flows is known for its citrus plantations and farming activities. The river is also popular for fishing and water sports, including canoeing and white-water rafting. The Gamtoos Irrigation Scheme, which began in the early 1960s, has made it possible to irrigate large areas of land for agriculture. The Gamtoos valley is home to several towns, including Patensie, Hankey, and Loerie.
