What is kruidnoot?

Kruidnoten are a traditional Dutch gingerbread-like cookie that is typically eaten in the Netherlands and Belgium during the Sinterklaas celebration. They are small, round, and crunchy in texture, and are flavoured with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, cardamom, and anise. The name "kruidnoot" translates to "spice nut" in English, and refers to the cookie's spicy flavour. Kruidnoten are typically served alongside pepernoten, another traditional Dutch cookie, during Sinterklaas festivities. They are often baked at home, but are also widely available in supermarkets and bakeries throughout the Netherlands in the months leading up to Sinterklaas.
