What is mesiodens?

Mesiodens is an extra tooth that grows between the two upper front teeth. It is the most common type of supernumerary teeth that appears in about 0.15-1.9% of the population. Mesiodens is a small, cone-shaped, and non-functional tooth that grows in the midline of the upper jaw. It can cause a variety of dental problems such as crowding, misalignment, and delayed eruption of permanent teeth. Diagnosis of mesiodens can be done through radiographic examination, and treatment involves extraction of the tooth to prevent further complications. The extraction should be done at an earlier age to avoid potential damage to the surrounding permanent teeth. If left untreated, mesiodens can lead to cyst formation, resorption of adjacent teeth roots, and developmental abnormalities.
