What is physic-nut?

Physic-nut (Jatropha curcas) is a small shrub or tree that belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. It is native to Central America and has spread to many tropical regions around the world. Physic-nut is a drought-tolerant plant with a maximum height of 5-7 meters.

Physic-nut produces seeds that contain a high amount of oil, which is considered a promising biofuel source. The oil from the seeds is also used in the production of soap, lubricants, bio-plastics, and paints.

The plant has several medicinal uses and is used to treat a variety of ailments such as edema, constipation, and skin diseases. However, the plant contains toxic compounds, and its leaves, seeds, and oil should be used with caution.

Despite its potential as a biodiesel crop, the cultivation of physic-nut has faced many challenges, especially in terms of profitability, sustainability, and socio-economic impacts on farmers and communities.
