avirus
Polyomavirus is a small, double-stranded DNA virus that belongs to the family Polyomaviridae. There are several types of polyomaviruses that can infect humans, including the JC virus, BK virus, and Merkel cell polyomavirus. These viruses are widespread in the environment and can infect people of all ages.
JC virus (JCV) is the most common of the polyomaviruses and is estimated to infect up to 80% of adults by the age of 50. Most people who become infected with JCV do not develop symptoms. However, in people with weakened immune systems, the virus can cause progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare and serious brain infection that can lead to disability and death.
BK virus (BKV) can also cause serious illness in people with weakened immune systems, including kidney transplant recipients and people with HIV. BKV can lead to hemorrhagic cystitis, a painful inflammation of the bladder, and nephropathy, a kidney disease that can lead to transplant failure.
Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV) has been linked to the development of Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer. MCPyV is found in the skin of healthy individuals and can infect and integrate into the DNA of Merkel cells, leading to the development of cancer.
There is no treatment for polyomavirus infections, and prevention involves maintaining good hygiene practices, especially in healthcare settings, and immunization against some of the underlying diseases that can lead to weakened immune systems.
