What is r-tms?

rTMS or repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that uses magnetic fields to stimulate or inhibit specific areas of the brain. It has been FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

During rTMS, a coil is placed on the scalp and a magnetic pulse is administered to the targeted brain area. This pulse causes small electrical currents in the brain, which can help regulate neural activity. The treatment usually consists of daily sessions lasting between 20 and 40 minutes for several weeks.

rTMS has shown promising results in treating a range of other neurological and psychiatric conditions, including anxiety disorders, chronic pain, and schizophrenia. It is generally well-tolerated, with few side effects.

Although rTMS is a relatively safe and non-invasive treatment, it should only be performed by trained professionals in a clinical setting. Patients with implanted medical devices, such as pacemakers, should not undergo rTMS.
