What is underriding?

Underriding occurs when a vehicle collides with another vehicle, and the front of the second vehicle goes under the other vehicle, resulting in severe injury or death to passengers in the second vehicle. It is most common in crashes involving large trucks, where the smaller passenger vehicle slides under the truck. Underriding can be prevented by installing rear guards on trucks, which prevent smaller vehicles from going under the truck in a crash. Many countries have laws requiring rear guard equipment on trucks and trailers to prevent underriding.
