What is vaqueira?

Vaqueira is a term used to describe a cattle herder or cowboy in the regions of Asturias and Galicia, located in the northwestern part of Spain. These vaqueiros (plural form) have a rich cultural heritage, including their own language, music, costumes, and traditional lifestyle. They are known for their skills in handling cattle, horseback riding, and other agricultural activities. Many of them live in high mountain valleys and isolated areas, with a scattered population and a strong sense of community. The vaqueiros were historically considered a distinct cultural group within Spanish society, with their own laws, customs, and social norms. Nowadays, vaqueiradas (gatherings of vaqueiros) are held annually to celebrate their unique culture and traditions.
