What is vaqueiros?

Vaqueiros are traditional cattle herders who live in the northern regions of Spain and Portugal, particularly in Galicia, Asturias, and Cantabria in Spain, and in the Minho and Tras-os-Montes regions of Portugal.

The vaqueiros tend to wear distinctive clothing, such as wide-brimmed hats, ponchos, and leather boots, and they have a unique way of herding cattle, which is quite different from the techniques used by cowboys in other parts of the world.

Traditionally, vaqueiros were a nomadic people who migrated with their herds from one grazing ground to another. Over time, however, many settled down and became farmers, but they continued to maintain their cultural traditions and practices.

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in vaqueiro culture, with renewed attention being paid to their music, dance, and cuisine. Many vaqueiros continue to celebrate their heritage by holding annual festivals and competitions, and by sharing their knowledge and skills with new generations of cattle herders and farmers.
