It marks the beginning of the astronomical New Year in these regions. The festival typically falls in the month of Medam (April-May) according to the Malayalam calendar.
A significant aspect of Vishu is the "Vishu Kani", which involves arranging auspicious items like fruits, vegetables, gold, coins, mirrors, and images of deities in a tray or a room to be viewed first thing in the morning. This first sight is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune for the entire year.
Other customs include the exchange of gifts ("Vishu kaineetam"), special feasts ("Vishu sadhya"), and firework displays. The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm and is an important cultural event for Malayalees.
