What is visithiran?

Visithiran (விசித்திரன்) was a celebrated Tamil poet and a close friend of the Chola king, Rajaraja I (reigned c. 985 – 1014 CE). He is known primarily for his contributions to the Thiruvisaippa, a collection of devotional hymns dedicated to Lord Shiva, which forms part of the sacred Saiva scriptures (Tirumurai).

Specifically, Visithiran composed a single decad (பதிகம்) within the Thiruvisaippa. His verses are characterized by their exquisite poetic imagery and deep devotion. While little is directly known about his personal life, his association with Rajaraja I suggests a position of prominence and influence within the Chola court. The name "Visithiran" itself translates to "strange" or "wonderful," which might allude to his unique poetic style or extraordinary qualities. His compositions are valuable sources for understanding the religious and cultural context of the Chola period. His association with Rajaraja I also gives him importance as a literary figure of the era.
