What is kortisol?

Cortisol, also known as hydrocortisone, is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland in the human body. It plays an important role in regulating a variety of physiological functions such as metabolism, immune response, inflammation, and blood pressure. Cortisol is released in response to stress, and helps the body to cope with stress by increasing blood sugar levels and suppressing the immune system. It also plays a critical role in the fight or flight response by increasing alertness, focus, and energy levels. However, prolonged cortisol release due to chronic stress can lead to negative health effects such as weight gain, mood disorders, and immune system dysfunction. Cortisol levels can be measured through a simple blood or saliva test, and abnormal levels can be treated through lifestyle changes, medication, or therapy.
