What is moitessier?

Bernard Moitessier was a French sailor, born on 10 April 1925, in Indochina, Vietnam, and died on 16 June 1994, in the French Polynesia. He became famous after participating in the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in 1968-1969. Bernard gained legendary status for his decision to abandon the race while in the lead and continue sailing around the world, completing a nonstop solo circumnavigation of the globe. He wrote several books about his sailing adventures, including his famous autobiography, "The Long Way," which is considered a classic of sailing literature. Moitessier was also known for his ecological activism and commitment to preserving the environment. He was awarded the Royal Cruising Club's Seamanship Medal in 1971 for his achievements and contributions to sailing.
