What is peroxy?

Peroxy is a prefix used to denote a chemical compound containing the -O-O- peroxide group. Peroxides are highly reactive compounds that can undergo self-decomposition, oxidation, or reduction reactions. They are used in a variety of industrial processes and products, including bleaching agents, polymerization catalysts, and as disinfectants. Common examples of peroxides include hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, and acetyl peroxide. Peroxides are also produced naturally in the atmosphere as a result of photochemical reactions, where they contribute to the formation of air pollution. However, exposure to peroxides can be hazardous and must be done with caution as they can be highly reactive and explosive.
